Upon announcing to my friends that I was embarking on a three year adventure to Laos, great concern was expressed for my hair. Who in a land of straight fine hair would know the techniques to successfully master cutting curly thick hair. The master of curly hair in Edmonton provided me with one final hair cut and assured me I could just let it grow out and all would be fine.
Upon arriving in Laos I started my search for foreigners with curly hair. While celebrating American Thanksgiving two women with thick curly hair and several years experience living in Laos provided me with Eng's name. "On a good day you'll be satisfied!", they reported. Surrounded by the curly hair support group, I also discovered that Tony & Guy hair products could also be purchased just across the border in Thailand. I breathed a sigh of relief and no longer needed to worry about heavy hair products making their way to Laos from Canada.
And so, early in January after reaching total hair frustration, I went in search ofEng. Eng, formerly from New York, but Lao by birth, worked his magic after looking at my photo of a good hair day and provided a very satisfactory hair cut ready for the daily abuse of wearing a motorcycle helmet.

Did you eat grasshoppers???
Yes, I did eat grasshoppers, as well as, some kind of beatle. I prefer grasshoppers. Anyone interested in trying grilled bats? There are both large and small bats. The vendor assured me they are very delicious, but it was all could do to continue to stand by the BBQ after I realized what he was grilling.
