Baking Sugar Cookies

With less than two weeks until Christmas, it is once again time to bake sugar cookies.

The previous day I had purchased all the necessary ingredients and located the bargain priced cookie cutters I had found while in Canada this past summer.

With the necessary ingredients and equipment collected, I began to measure the ingredients into the mixing bowl. Having forgotten to leave the butter at room temperature, I patiently measured out the other ingredients, while the butter softened.

Suddenly there was a skittering sound above my head, around the light fixture. I jumped, anticipating something was coming through the ceiling. I have lived in this house for nearly 5 months and never heard anything in the kitchen ceiling. There are a variety of small geckos that roam the kitchen, but they quickly run away when I start moving around the kitchen. This did not sound like a gecko. Then I heard the “thing” run to the second light and work its away around the light, sending dust particles floating down into the kitchen, through the small hole between the ceiling and the light.

With the butter softened I began to mix the ingredients, all the while conscious of the “thing” above my head.

Earlier in the week, friends had reported how a cat had fallen through their drop ceiling into their kitchen. I was sure the “thing” was not a cat, but there was no way I wanted anything falling through the ceiling into my kitchen. I had dealt with the ants in my sugar cookies last year, but a “thing” in my sugar cookies would be too much!!

So, with an ear and an eye to the ceiling, I mixed the ingredients and then rolled out the dough, calling out clear instructions to the “thing” that it was not welcome in my kitchen.

Eventually it was quiet above my head, but I continued to be on alert, afraid the “thing” had perhaps found an alternate route to approach my sugar cookies.

In the end, the sugar cookies turned out great and neither the “thing” or ants got into my sugar cookies. I dread to think what might attempt to get into the sugar cookies next year!!
