Elephant Ride

Gary & Kim came to visit and during this time we enjoyed an elephant ride in Luang Prabang, in northern Laos.

Laos was once known as the land of the million elephants, but these days less than 2000 elephants remain in Laos of which only about 800 are considered wild, the rest are working or domesticated elephants.
Elephants have historically played an important role in assisting with logging. However, as the forests disappear, elephants no longer are needed in this role. The Elephant Park Project promotes economic alternatives for "mahouts" (elephant keepers) and their elephants through the development of ecotourism.
Under the guidance of the "mahout", Kim and Gary became "mahouts" in-training.
We all very much enjoyed this close encounter with the elephants and the natural environment of Luang Prabang.
