It's just a few days before the official start of summer, but as I drive from Kitchener to Brussels up the "back way", I enjoy the absolutely perfect summer evening. This drive through the country side has always been one of my favourites.
The smell of fresh cut hay lingers in the air. Bouquets of fresh cut flowers that are for sale, decorate the ends of farm vendor driveways. Signs advertising the sale of quilts, summer sausage and other country goodies are posted here and there. The vibrant green colour of soya beans, wheat, corn and garden vegetables, in their early stages of growth, fill the fields.
Just before Heidelburg I spot a sign advertising fresh strawberries. I pull in and purchase two quarts of fresh strawberries for a reasonable price.
Later I make a stop at Anna Mae's for a freshly baked raspberry pie and chelsea buns. I'm not sure what it is about Anna Mae's, but it draws me in every time. There's just something about the smells, sounds and sights of a countryside restaurant in Old Order Mennonite country.
With my goodies from the countryside purchased, I think of my co-worker in Laos. A trip back from the countryside to the Capital City always includes at least one stop to purchase food to take back home. Fresh fish are a favourite, but chemical-free produce, melons, ducks, and rice are also common purchases.
I continue on my way to Brussels enjoying the setting sun and the kaleidoscope of colour it displays.
