A nursing home?
A hospital?
Or a spa?
When I was first told MCC staff generally access Bangkok Nursing Home in Bangkok, Thailand for medical care, I was somewhat surprised. Immediately picturing a Canadian nursing home, I wondered what kind of medical services would be offered. Then it was clarified and explained to me that BNH is a hospital. Was this any better? Anyone that has accompanied me to a hospital knows my fondness for visiting hospitals and I wondered if the experience of visiting BNH would rapidly cause colour to fade from my cheeks.
Well, as it turns out, my first visit to BNH for an annual check turned out to be more like the experience of visiting a spa for a day. (Not that I have actually done this yet!!) Upon arrival I could choose the annual check-up package of my preference:
pre-employment, classic, grande, the royal
Working for a non-profit organization, the classic package was recommended, with the option of adding additional items as needed.
BNH opened in 1898 as a private hospital to meet the needs of internationals living in Thailand and surrounding countries. With a focus on quality service, everything was done in a timely, efficient, very polite Thai manner.
The nursing staff carefully facilitated my move from room to room and floor to floor, confirming my identity each time before proceeding with the service. For 2.5 hours I moved throughout the hospital, with my final stop in the doctor's office, where he completed the physical and pulled up all the test results on his computer:
EKG - heart - normal
Cholesterol - good
Liver function - normal
Chest x-ray - normal
proceeding through kidney function, plasma glucose, and on down the list.
All the test results will be emailed to me for my future reference. Imagine having your personal medical information provided to you without requesting or signing release forms. I left feeling relaxed, renewed and ready for another year of good health.
